Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity
The Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity at Iowa State University is committed to the development of a campus community that promotes gender equity and social justice. Through a feminist lens, the Sloss Center advocates for individuals and groups; provides support and referrals; and offers programming and educational resources for the advancement of gender equity.
Working collaboratively with on and off campus services and programs, The Sloss Center strives to support gender equity and achievement toward intellectual, professional, and personal goals of members of the Iowa State community and beyond.
The Sloss Center enacts these ideals through the implementation of the following four values:
1. Sustain a center infrastructure that promotes gender equity.
2. Provide intentional and inclusive educational programming promoting gender equity and social justice through a feminist lens.
3. Infuse best practices and current research in the fields of feminism, equity, and student development into the programming and resources offered.
4. Maintain and develop internal and external relationships that are central to the center’s function and impact.
The Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity envisions a campus community that works collaboratively to create an environment that supports and promotes gender equity and social justice at Iowa State University.
- Priority will be given to programs of the Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity (Sloss Center) and programs sponsored by the Sloss Center. Following other users of the facility with missions, goals, and objectives consistent with the mission and purposes of the Sloss Center.
- Rooms are reserved on a first-come first-served basis. Reservation application is available online at: https://sloss.dso.iastate.edu/facility and must be completed prior to confirming the reservation.
- Rooms cannot be reserved for more than one semester in advance.
- Reservations are assigned space at the discretion of the Sloss Center staff.
- Reservations are limited to groups of 10 or less
- Reservations will only be allowed after 5 pm
- Only 1 reservation is accepted per evening
- Reservations are for the first floor only, no reservation can take place on the second floor.
- Prior to leaving, the reservation cleaning and attendance checklist must be completed and left in the Sunroom
- Each reservation must provide a contact person, telephone number, email address, and purpose of the meeting/reservation.
- A damage deposit of $100 must accompany the reservation form. This may be a personal check or completed intramural form. A Sloss Center staff member will review the condition of the Sloss House after a reservation, if damages are incurred above $100, the group, organization or individual will be responsible for all costs. If no damages are incurred, the deposit will be shredded at the end of the semester.
- Deposit checks are written to “The Margaret Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity.”
- Returned deposits are shredded once every semester and an email will be received on the day the deposit was shredded.
- The Sloss Center must receive deposits from non-Iowa State affiliated groups/organizations a minimum of 2 business days before the reservation date. Plan time to mail the deposit accordingly. Failure to do so will result in the termination of the reservation.
- If a key needs to be checked out, a deposit of $30 must accompany the key checkout form (check or intramural). Keys must be returned to the bulletin board outside 205 Sloss prior to leaving at the end of your reservation. Instructions are attached to the key.
- No group, club, or organization may transfer the reservation to another group, club, or organization.
- If any group requests large amounts of time, the request must be received two weeks in advance of the event and approved by the Sloss Center staff.
- Cancellations must be made 24 hours in advance. Failure to do so will result in loss of reservation privileges for the group or organization for the semester.
The guidelines below must be followed or may result in the loss of deposit and/or the group may be required to complete additional facilities upkeep time for the renting organization. If there is a building emergency like a toilet overflows or the power goes out please contact Facilities Planning and Management at 515-294-5100.
- Return the space to the same condition it was in when you began using it.
- Chairs and tables returned to storage or to original configuration.
- All high-contact surfaces, tables, doorknobs must be wiped down with the provided cleaning supplies.
- Dishes are loaded into dishwasher and sink is empty. The dishwasher must be run nightly. Detergent is located under the kitchen sink.
- Leftover food is removed and nothing is stored on the counter or tables.
- Tables are clean and floors are swept and vacuumed as needed (supplies in the kitchen closet).
- Lights are shut off except for the hallway light found at the bottom of the stairway near the front door.
- Trash is placed in proper receptacles.
- Excessive trash, more than what receptacles can hold, is removed and placed in dumpsters north of Curtiss Hall and southwest of Ross Hall.
- All windows and doors are closed and locked.
- The area around the building (outside the building, on the building, and immediately outside the front and back doors) is free from decor, messaging, and anything associated with your use of the building.
- The Sloss Center is left locked Monday through Thursday from 5pm to 8am and Friday at 5 pm to Monday at 8am.
- The Sloss Center staff (prior to installation) must approve all decorations, displays and any use of tape both inside and immediately outside of the Sloss House.
- Only painter’s blue tape is acceptable.
- All decorations must be removed before you leave.
- Bulletin boards are maintained by Sloss Center Staff.
- Materials to be posted must be given to Sloss Center Staff prior to posting
- Materials must be dated and initialed by Sloss Center Staff
- Materials will be discarded weekly based on date of event/information
- Materials without dates will be discarded 14 days after being received
- Materials may not be posted on walls
- Brochures are to be placed in the brochure rack
- Any brochure, posters, fliers, etc. not placed in the brochure rack or distributed without Sloss Center Staff approval will be discarded
- Alcoholic beverages of any kind are prohibited.
- Candles, incenses, or any use of flame is prohibited.
- No pets of any kinds may be in the building except for animals used for guides and/or assistance.
- Activities that may damage the floors are prohibited.
- Children must be supervised at all times.
- All guests must comply by with the City of Ames and ISU Fire and Safety Codes.
- All guests must comply with the Iowa State University Code of Conduct.
- Including university chalking and signage policies
- Failure to follow any of the use guidelines could result in a charge to clean, restore or repair the facilities, and disqualification from use of the building in the future.
- Return the space to the same condition it was in when you began using it.
Anything not mentioned in the above use guidelines will be handled on a case-by-case basis. If controversial situations arise, the Sloss Center may act in the capacity of an appeal board. Any violation of the above guidelines will result in disqualification from use of the building for an academic year
- Room 103: First floor lounge room (with TV) – French doors and sliding door separate room for other areas but does not guarantee privacy. Seats 6 comfortably with the option to bring in additional chairs or utilize floor are Television and DVD player available for use. Capacity 8
- Room 101: First floor living room – Comfortable seating for 7 people with the option to bring in additional chairs or utilize floor area. French doors, sliding doors separate room from other areas, but traffic may flow through area during regular office hours.
- Room 105: First floor kitchen facilities – Door separates kitchen from other first floor area. Area remains open to second floor office space. Refrigerator, dishwasher microwave oven, sinks, coffee maker, oven, and toaster is available for use. Table seating can range from 4 to 6 with the option to bring in additional chairs or utilize floor area.
- Room 102: First floor sunroom – Adjacent to backdoor. French doors separate sunroom from other areas. During regular office hours, traffic may flow through this area. Capacity 8
