What We Do

The Sloss Center for Women and Gender Equity has a long history of supporting students navigating pregnancy and parenting while pursuing their academic degrees. We believe that education builds futures.

We want all students to feel supported in their path to a degree; whether you’re balancing your studies with caring for dependents, struggling financially, are food insecure, are in an unsafe home situation, or need additional academic support - our staff can help you find the resources to help.

When you meet with someone on our staff, you’re connecting with someone who is knowledgeable about our extensive campus resources as well as community partners.

We strive to constantly update our list of available resources and providers so that you don’t have to. We work collaboratively with our academic and student affairs partners as well as organizations that cater to expectant parents and parents in the wider Ames community.

The Sloss House and Support

The Sloss House welcomes parents on campus and offers a child-friendly space to study and relax.  Amenities such as a freezer for breast milk storage, a children's corner, toddler snacks, diapers, wipes, toys, and kids' books are free. We also have games and art activities for children of all ages. If you need to meet with classmates to finish a group project after daycare hours or meet with a professor on a day your babysitter cancelled, please consider Sloss!
